Sticker wars in Cairo-Egypt between Christians & Muslims: The Fish vs. the Shark
In Cairo this year, there were the "sticker wars." Many Egyptian Christians were sporting fish-shaped stickers on their cars
(the fish has been a symbol of Christianity since the 1st century AD). This year, Muslim drivers in Cairo started affixing their own
sticker: an open-mouthed shark, the words "Allahu Akhbar" inscribed inside. The message was clear, and after a wire service
noted the increase in competing stickers, the Egyptian press and the Interior Ministry stepped in - one with calls for "national unity"
and the other with fines for any motorist with either kind of sticker.
